 Grammar 文法Submit a Question
The Grammar sections of each lesson give you the building blocks necessary to speak Japanese properly. Make sure that you read and understand each section.

7-1. Using でmo

でmo is used to connect two complete sentences together. The second sentence begins with でmo.

(Sentence 1)。 でmo、(Sentence 2)

(Sentence 1). But, (Sentence 2)

7-2. The war between and

Even the Japanese don’t really know why sometimes is used over . There have been books written solely about and . I won’t even attempt to completely explain everything about these elusive particles. Instead, I’ll give you a set of basic rules that will help you know when to use or . Here is a list of rules that you should know.

Rule #1 – すき きraい and ほしい
In Lesson 5 you learned that is used with すき and きraい. You also learned that is used with ほしい and ほしくない in Lesson 6.
1. Waたし は すし が すき です.
I like sushi.
2. Waたし は すし が きraい です.
I dislike sushi.
3. Waたし は すし が ほしい です.
I want sushi.
4. Waたし は すし が ほしくない です.

Rule #2 – Question words
When a question word such as どre どこ だre etc. is the topic or part of the topic must be used to mark it.
1. だre の くruma が あお です か.
Whose car is blue?
2. どre が waたし の です か.
Which one is mine?

Rule #3 – Matching sentence pattern
The answer to a question usually uses the same marker as the question. In other words, if the question uses , then so does the answer. The same goes for .
Example Q&A
1.       だre の くruma が あお です か.
Waたし の くruma が あお です.

 Whose car is blue?
 My car is blue.
2.       どre が waたし の です か.
    そre が あなたの です.

 Which one is mine?
 That one is yours.

7-3. Using and が to stress

In this lesson we learn a new rule. The basic rule is: stresses for , and stresses for . In other words, where is normally used, will be used to stress and vice versa. For example when you say that you like something, the item that you like is normally marked with . Take a look at the following sentence: “I like vegetables, but I don’t like carrots.” In this sentence, the fact that carrots are not liked is emphasized.

Therefore, in Japanese the sentence would have to be: Yaさい が すき です。で mo にnじn すきjaない です. When Yaさい が すき です. is said, nothing is being stressed, so is used. However, in the second sentence, is used because the speaker is emphasizing the fact that, even though he likes vegetables, he DOESN’T like carrots. Generally, it is not natural to begin a conversation using a stress. Usually emphasis occurs only when something is said in contrast to a prior statement. In the following examples, A’s statement or question leads to B’s response using to stress a contrast.

Example Conversation
1.       Rinご は きいro です.
    いいえ、 banana が きいro です.

 Apples are yellow.
 No, bananas are yellow
2.       かのjo は くどうさn です か.
    いいえ、 waたし が くどう です.

 Is she Mrs. Kudo?
 No, I am Kudo.
3.       たださn の くruma は muraさき の toyota です か.
    いいえ、 waたし の くruma が muraさき の toyota です.

Is Tada's car the purple Toyota?
No, my car is the purple Toyota

7-4. Using どこ as the topic of the sentence

You must be careful when using どこ as the topic of a sentence. Example: You should not say, どこ が あなた の いぬ です か, to mean “Where is your dog?” since this sentence structure incorrectly makes “where” the topic. The correct topic of this sentence is “your dog,” and should be phrased: あなたのいぬ は どこ です か. Hint: It’s always better to avoid beginning a sentence with a question word unless absolutely necessary.
